BRIER CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MINUTES
February 19, 2008
Commission Chairman Szalda called the meeting to order at 4:10:53 PM.
ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Szalda and
Nixdorf.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Nixdorf moved and Commissioner Szalda
seconded to approve the minutes of January 9, 2008. Motion carried.
NEW BUSINESS:
A.
APPROVE ACADEMY GRADUATE POLICE OFFICER AMENDMENTS TO RULES
Commissioner Szalda opened for discussion the approval of
Academy Graduate Police Officer amendments to the Civil Service Rules. The
prepared amendments to sections 8.4, 8.7, 10.2.1 and Appendix “A” were
submitted and reviewed by the Commission.
Commissioner Szalda moved and Commissioner Nixdorf
seconded to adopt the amended section 8.7.2 as it applies to Academy Graduate
Police Officer. Motion carried.
B.
DISCUSS EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS FOR LATERAL AND ADACEMY GRADUATE
CANDIDATES
Commissioner Szalda opened
for discussion the examination requirements for Lateral and Academy graduate
candidates. Per section 8.1 of the Rules, Secretary Halverson requested
approval by the commission to require Academy Graduate and Lateral Police
Officer candidates to obtain a minimum score of 70% on any chosen exam so they
can be placed on the perspective eligibility list in rank order and continue in
the application process. It was decided section 8.1.1 should be amended to show
all applicants must obtain a minimum of 70% on any required examination to
continue in the application process. Secretary Halverson will prepare the
amendment for adoption at the next meeting.
Commissioner Nixdorf moved and Commissioner
Szalda seconded to add language to 8.1.1 that candidates must obtain a minimum
score of 70% on any required examination to continue in the application
process. Motion carried.
C.
EXTEND ENTRY LEVEL ELIGIBILITY LIST FOR ONE YEAR
Commissioner Szalda opened
for discussion extension of the Entry Level Eligibility List for one year.
Secretary Halverson reported per Civil Service Rules section 9.2.2 the
Commission may extend eligibility lists. Halverson reported there are nine (9)
candidates remaining on the Entry Level Eligibility List and requested the
Commission extend this list for one year.
Commissioner Nixdorf moved and Commissioner
Szalda seconded to extend the current Entry Level Eligibility List for an
additional year. Motion carried.
OLD BUSINESS
A. DISCUSS
AMENDMENT LANGUAGE TO SECTION 3.1.2 REGARDING SCHEDULED MEETING TIME
Commissioner Szalda opened
for discussion amendment language to section 3.1.2 regarding scheduled Civil
Service meeting times. Commissioner Nixdorf suggested the Commission continue
to meet on the first Wednesday of each month but remove the time of the
meetings which shall be determined on a monthly basis. Commissioner Szalda
agreed. Secretary Halverson will prepare the amendment for approval at the next
meeting.
Commissioner Nixdorf moved and Commissioner Szalda
seconded to amend section 3.1.2 by removing “at 1:30 pm”. Motion carried.
MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS:
A.
Commissioner Szalda inquired
on staffing. Secretary Halverson reported
Officer MacKenzie may be leaving for Mountlake Terrace
sometime in April.
That position would then need to be refilled.

Szalda moved and Commissioner
Nixdorf seconded to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Szalda declared
the meeting adjourned at 4:30 PM.
