CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MINUTES
February 7, 2024
7:00 PM
Chairperson Peterson called the meeting to order at
7:00 PM.
ROLL CALL:
Present: Chairperson Peterson and Commissioner
Williamson.
Absent: Commissioner Leonard.
Staff: Civil Service Secretary Carrie Snowden, City
Clerk Paula Swisher and Interim Police Chief Alex Hawley.
APPROVAL OF
MINUTES:
Chairperson Peterson opened for consideration
approval of the Civil Service Commission minutes of November 1st, 2023. Motion: Approve the meeting minutes
from November 1, 2023. Moved by Commissioner Peterson, Seconded by Commissioner Williamson. Motion
Carried.
OLD BUSINESS:
Chairperson Peterson asked Chief Hawley about the
mission statement and the status, Chief Hawley
mentioned that we will be discussing that later in the meeting. Chief Hawley gave an update regarding the
department, shared that Coffee with the Cops that was
held in December 2023 was a success and the next event will be in March 2024.
Chairperson Peterson asked for clarification regarding the Oral board questions,
lateral vs. new entry, there was discussion between the Chief and
commissioners.
NEW BUSINESS:
Chairperson Peterson opened for consideration approval
of the Oral Board Certification List dated February 2024. Motion: Approve the Oral Board Certification list dated February
2024. Moved by Commissioner
Williamson, Seconded by Commissioner
Peterson. Motion Carried.
MISCELLANEOUS
BUSINESS:
City Clerk Swisher stated that Kaitlyn Windus will
be confirmed to the commission at the February 13th council meeting upon
Commissioner Steve Leonard's resignation due to retiring from City of Seattle Police Department. Chairperson Peterson
asked City Clerk Swisher about the search for a new Police Chief- she stated
that the position has not been opened up or advertised
due to the Mayor and Chief Hawley wanting to have the department operating
smoothly and at full staff. Chairperson
Peterson thanked Chief Hawley for all his hard work.
City Clerk Swisher spoke about the Civil Service
Rules and Regulations and how they need to be updated. Chief Hawley has reviewed
the rules and regulations that are currently in place and found they don't actually apply to Brier. The rules and regulations will need
to be revised with help of the City Attorney and City
Clerk Swisher. The new draft will be
presented to the Commissioners at a later date.
There was discussion regarding the mission
statement for the commission, City Clerk Swisher stated that we don't
necessarily need one for the commission but if the commission would like to
have one, it can be placed on the front page of the new rules and regulations
document.

Chairperson Peterson declared the meeting adjourned
at 7:34 PM.
